I get a lot of questions about starting a dating site or starting a social site and most the questions I get are related to the business aspect of it and how site owners can make money from either dating software or social software. I’ve talked about this in previous posts but I will go into more detail about the business side of it here.

When it comes to dating software and social software, the dating site has a proven business model that works. It works well and that’s due to the membership side of it where if you want to chat, email or IM someone on the dating site, then you have to pay but with social software, it’s 180 degrees the other way. As we all know, social sites like myspace, facebook, friendster, tribe all use advertising on their sites to generate their income. They can and they make millions doing it. The other side of the coin for that is the free dating sites like PlentyofFish.com. He has a free dating site and makes his money from advertising. But in the same breath, he has major problems with his site being free. It’s full of scammers and spammers just jockeying for your money to steal.

While dating sites will always make money people will ask how to make money with social software. With a social site, it’s all about the numbers and numbers are people and people are profiles and the more profiles you have then the more money you make. If you got tens of thousands of current members on your social site then you are probably sitting pretty good. Earning money from Adsense and selling advertising space on your social site is where you will make that money. Besides, most people want millions of members and just sell out. Unlike the facebook owner that decided not to sell out and try to make money with his site. I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or not. Last I heard he was trying to figure out the money generating aspect of his site.

So whether you are wanting to start a dating site or a social site, you can make money with them. Social sites take longer to make money while dating sites can start earning money with a just a few hundred profiles. Provided you are tackling a niche market and not going after the generalized memberships.
