There are a few things you need to be aware of when running a dating site. It all starts from the day you get your dating software installed. Once you get your site up and running, people are going to come from far and wide. It’s not the normal people you need to be concerned about. It’s the scammers and spammers that like to hit dating sites with stolen credit cards and hijacked Paypal accounts. I’ll give you some info to help you look for these people and what to do when them when you find them.
Doesn’t matter how good the dating software is, you can’t filter out bad people. So, here’s what to look for when they do come.
Don’t let anyone from Nigeria or Senegal into the site. Once you see a profile from that place then just delete it. If you can record their IP, then you can block them. They will use stolen credit cards to email/spam your other members. They will try to scam your members out of their money. So, don’t let anyone from there create a profile. Also, as a rule thumb, Western Africa should be deleted if created.
There are also Nigerian scammers and spammers that try to fool you by creating a profile. Most the time they create a female profile and it’s usually from New York. Even if your niche market is some other country. They just don’t get it. Trust me, they are not that smart. I have setup a Thai dating site and this scammer from Nigeria kept putting a New York profile on it. Even though it clearly said Thailand only. So, they are not smart.
One other thing to look out for when you have your dating software up and running is that scammers will put this type of text in the profile. They will use a name like “Miss Emily”. The word “Miss” is the tale tale sign. Not sure why but most Nigerian scammers will put that as well as put things like “God Fearing Woman”. Again, not sure why but they just do it. So, be on the look out for that type of stuff and just delete it.
OK, Paypal. This one is a bit hard but can be caught in time. Now, if someone uses a hijacked Paypal account that is not confirmed, then watch out. Make sure you have all the info and even contact the member by email to see if it’s correct. Usually ask for a phone number. If you don’t get a reply, then refund the amount. This will save you a lot of money in the long run because Paypal charges $10 dollars for a charge back. If you refund it, you are out NO money.
